The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures offers five distinct undergraduate major programs. Whether you want to master a modern language, dive deep into classical literature, or explore the rich religious and philosophical traditions of East Asia, we have a pathway for you.

We encourage all prospective majors to meet with our Undergraduate Major Advisor to map out their coursework, discuss transfer credits, and explore study abroad options.

• Chinese Major
  • Combine advanced modern Chinese language training with a deep exploration of Chinese literature, film, linguistics, and cultural history.
• Japanese Major
  • Develop high-level Japanese language proficiency while studying Japan's vibrant classical and modern literary traditions, pop culture, and media.
• Korean Languages and Cultures Major
  • Gain fluency in modern Korean and explore Korea’s rich cultural heritage, modern history, literature, and global cultural impact.
• East Asian Religion, Thought, and Culture Major (EARTC)
  • An interdisciplinary major focused on the philosophical, spiritual, and intellectual traditions of East Asia (including Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism).
• East Asian Humanities Major
  • An incredibly flexible, comparative major focusing on East Asian literature, history, and culture. This major can be completed entirely through courses taught in English.

📝 How to Declare an EALC Major

Ready to make it official? Declaring is a simple process:

1. Review the Requirements: Visit the specific page for your chosen major above to understand the prerequisite and upper-division course requirements.
2. Meet with Cassandra: Book an advising appointment with our undergraduate advisor, Cassandra Dunn, to develop a program plan, discuss your goals, and officially declare your major.
