Xi Zhao

Chinese Program

Xi Zhao (趙希) is a Ph.D. student in EALC at UC Berkeley. Her research examines modern Chinese literature, music, and theater through interdisciplinary methods from musicology, linguistics, sound studies, and media studies. She is currently working on a dissertation project on prosody (yunlü 韻律) as a sonic technique and epistemology in modern China, resonating across language, literature, music, theater, and various media forms. Her other writings include modern Chinese school songs and folk songs, and her work on Yue Opera has appeared in Literary Review (《文學評論》). In her spare time, she enjoys playing piano and xiao (vertical bamboo flute), as well as writing reviews on Chinese-language popular music.
