Chinese Language Program
Shaowen Song received her M.A. in the Group of Asian Studies in 2013 and her B.A. in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) in 2010 from the University of California at Berkeley, focusing on Chinese language, thought, and literature. During her studies at UC Berkeley, she worked as a Chinese tutor, reader, and student instructor for five semesters in the Department of EALC. She also taught Mandarin for 4 years in heritage Chinese schools in the US and had one year experience teaching in a private high school, where she developed the curriculum for Mandarin 3. Prior to coming to the United States, she received three years teaching training at Xi’an Children Teachers’ Training School (1983-1986) and she obtained her AA for Music Education in Xi’an’s Music College in 1992. She worked as a teacher for 14 years in China (1986-2000); she speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese. One of her current interests is how to establish an effective and friendly language-learning atmosphere in order to inspire students to further explore Chinese language, culture, and history.
