A. Language Requirements:
|

| |
- Fluency
in modern spoken and written Chinese. Students who lack adequate
knowledge of spoken Chinese are encouraged
to spend a year abroad as early as possible in an intensive
program in China or Taiwan.
- Reading
knowledge of French, German, or Russian.

B. Course Requirements:

- Chinese
242A/B: Chinese Bibliography and Research Method (4 units Fall;4
units Spring).
- Three graduate
seminars, one in each of the following areas (12 units): Classical
Chinese Literature, Vernacular/Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese Linguistics.
- Two additional
graduate or upper-division courses, chosen in consultation
with the Graduate Adviser (8 units).
