Chinese Language M.A. Degree Requirements *

 
 

A. Language Requirements:

 
 
  • Fluency in modern spoken and written Chinese. Students who lack adequate knowledge of spoken Chinese are encouraged to spend a year abroad as early as possible in an intensive program in China or Taiwan.
  • Reading knowledge of French, German, or Russian.
 
 

B. Course Requirements:

 
 
  • Chinese 242A/B: Chinese Bibliography and Research Method (4 units Fall;4 units Spring).
  • Three graduate seminars, one in each of the following areas (12 units): Classical Chinese Literature, Vernacular/Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese Linguistics.
  • Two additional graduate or upper-division courses, chosen in consultation with the Graduate Adviser (8 units).

Chinese Language Ph.D. Degree Requirements

 
 

A. Language Requirements

 
 
  • Advanced training in modern Japanese, satisfied by completion of one upper-division course in modern Japanese (e.g., J100A or equivalent).
  • Reading knowledge of French, German, or Russian unless completed at the M.A. level in this program.
 
 

B. Course Requirements

 
 
  • Three courses (upper-division or graduate level) to be chosen in consultation with the Graduate Adviser (12 units).
 
 

C. Oral Qualifying Exam

 
 
  • Language requirements must be met before application to sit the oral exam.
 
 

D. Dissertation

 
     
     
 

Japanese Language M.A. Degree Requirements *

 
 

A. Language Requirements

 
 
  • Reading knowledge of one of the following: French, German, Classical Chinese, or when clearly relevant to the proposed program, Russian.
 
 

B. Course Requirements

 
 
  • Three graduate seminars in Japanese (12 units).
  • Two additional upper-division or graduate courses chosen in consultation with the Graduate Adviser (8 units).

Japanese Language Ph.D. Degree Requirements

 
 

A. Language Requirements

 
 
  • Reading knowledge of classical Chinese unless completed at the M.A. level in this program.
  • Advanced knowledge of classical Japanese.
 
 

B. Course Requirements

 
 
  • Two graduate seminars in addition to the ones satisfying the minimum for the M.A. One must be in Japanese, the other may be in Chinese.
 
 

C. Oral Qualifying Exam

  * All students must apply for the Ph.D. program. The department does not offer programs for the M.A. degrees, but, rather, a M.A. degree can be achieved while progressing towards a Ph.D. degree.
